When my younger boy Ollie was about 1 he is 5 now, he came in from outside and suddenly was broken out in hives and his eyes and lips where swelling so I threw Benadryl in him and we rushed to the Vet where they gave him more Benadryl and a steroid shot and we could never figure out what he reacted to it was crazy we never found any bite or sting. This also was at like 11 at night which meant ER vet. He hasn't ever had it again. When he was stung by the European hornet I just knew that was it and he was going to react but he didn't. Its scary stuff.
