As to things to have on hand: Crate, potty pads (if you plan to train on them), toys, food, nutrical, puppy shampoo, treats (I use cheerios and yogurt drops).
As to the type of crate, I personally use the plastic ones. Tia, the puppy's, has a grate on the top that she can see through. I also have a bigger crate in our living room that both of my girls sleep in while we watch TV.
