In my opinion it is best to do before the first heat to just about completely avoid mammary growth to avoid mammary cancer. Even puppies are at risk for pyometra it does happen. I spay at 6 months. All new studies point to no difference in small dogs growth by spaying at 6 months. Also all studies show spayed and neutered dogs live longer.
