Default ACL injury

Our Yorkie Hudson ( 11 pounds, 10 years old) was jumping around in the back yard Wednesday and then began limping. We took him to the vet yesterday and she diagnosed him with a possible torn ACL in his left rear knee. She recommended a surgeon for a consultation and X-rays. Our concern is what’s best for Hudson, surgery or physical therapy. Right now he’s on a painkiller ( Gabapentin ) and we try to keep him from moving around much. He’s such a trooper and never hints of pain. Has anyone else experienced this issue? Thank you.
