Well it depends on the type of shunting he has. if it is just the one shunt in the portal vein surgery can be done to correct. My Charlie did not have this type, he had many tiny shunts through out his liver that could not be corrected with surgery. He hd to eat a very vegetarian dies (Royal Canin Hepatic) he was allowed chicken and could eat regular vegetables. Charlies was pretty severe in that he did have seizures that I treated with phenobarbital when they occurred. He lived a very long life with me and and passed at 16 years old do to other health issues. My only suggestion would be to make sure you have a vet that really knows about shunting, it makes a world of difference. Unless your pup is to sick it shouldn't keep him from being spayed at least when he is better.
