If something unusual catches Piper's eye when she is inside, she frantically barks and paws at patio door until I can let her out...or not! And depending on what she sees (varmint, deer, the rare loose pooch), she is practically out-the-door before I slide it all the way open. Even though her area is securely fenced, her speed and determination to "get" the intruder surprises me 'most every time. I, of course, am right there to monitor all this activity IF I let Pipe out and believe me, there are several times that Piper has to wait inside until "the threat" (deer???) are safely away. I would be very uncomfortable if Piper were able to go outside at will, as there are just too many variables that could cause problems. Plus, Piper is already too independent for our own good; I want her to know she can turn to me to (hopefully) strengthen our connection!
