Unfortunately, I don’t think there’s an exact answer to that question. It depends on the size of the dog, the dog’s overall health & immune system, the amount of retained material, etc.. One dog might have serious symptoms within a day or two of giving birth, and another dog might have only vague symptoms for a week and then crash suddenly from the infection.
It seems to me that you’re concerned, which I would hope would be a good enough reason for your vet to do an exam to make sure all is well.
