I have always done my dogs, and we used to have a mini-schnauzer who got so upset that he would grab a mouthful of hair as soon as I cut it off! We would have to take his hair out to the trashcans by the garage or he would headbutt the indoor trashcan when he smelled his hair inside. He would be fine and cuddle later, but I always had to endure being ignored for an hour or two following a haircut. We had him for nearly sixteen years, and he would act that way even when he had gone deaf and nearly blind. Lucky was his name, and he was a sweet, sweet soul...and a great big brother to our first two yorkie mixes.
