I think ammonia might actually be more harsh than pepper spray. Ammonia is toxic and could injure or kill a bird. You could try vinegar, which is non toxic but has a strong smell. Many birds don’t have a strong sense of smell, though. (I’m not sure about cranes.) Or you might try blowing a loud whistle to scare it away. Or maybe carry an umbrella, which you could open and put between the crane and your little one.
