It always fascinates me how you refer to your outside space as a yard.
We really are two nations divided by a common language.
To us a yard is a small concrete or flagstoned enclosure, usually surrounded by a brick wall, at the back of a terraced house in a town or else attached to a farm ( farmyard) or a stables but always a cobbled, flagged or some other hard standing area. Never so much as grass let alone flowers, shrubs or trees. To us flowers, shrubs, trees, lawns surrounding a house or any other building make up a garden whether tiny or big. Do you call anything a garden or are they always yards?
