This is a good question and both of my rescue pets required a contract stating that the animals would go back to the shelter they came from. My breeder gave me a contract listing the backup person (if any) which is my mom, and that she must get the pup back if it does not work out at my home or if in the future the pup must be given up. No shelters or rescue organization for it's little future. I'm glad you posted this because most rescue groups seem to feel strongly about it enough that they add it in with the pet agreement.
