The common cold is a variant of corona virus in humans.
The coronavirus vaccine for dogs covers two types of coronavirus. My vet said there are actually over 200 variants of coronavirus that can affect dogs.
Here, in 2009, when I adopted Tinkerbell from the Humane Society, coronavirus had been running through many places where dogs were kept in close quarters. She came home with a very runny nose and passed it to Peek a boo. As he was older at the time, he became extremely ill and almost died from it. Tink had clear fluid running out her nose. Peek a boo had massive amounts of white mucus where he could barely breathe nor eat. He had a fever of 105 F. The first antibiotics did not work, and on the second day the vet changed them and Peek showed great improvement in 24 hours, and recovered completely. I was scared out of my mind. Never saw an animal so sick in my life, not even during the 10 years I worked as a vet tech.
I did not catch anything from either dog. Peek was so bad off, they wouldn’t admit him to the hospital (I pleaded) and basically sent him home to die, so I was in very close contact caring for him throughout his illness.
Whenever I have symptoms of illness I try to stay out of my dogs faces out of an abundance of caution you never know. |
