Default Breeder said YES but they weren't removed! (Dew claws)

Maybe because I'm still a new mom, but I never thought to look at Oliver's claws very closely. Today, though, I noticed that his dew claws were still there!!! I was pretty sure that the breeder would have taken care of that- and sure enough it is in her contract. I e-mailed her today to ask her why they may have been neglected... but I'm kind of questioning what to do next. How essencial is it to remove the dew claws? or does it really matter as long as we are careful? and how difficult (and painful) would it be to remove Oliver's little dewclaws now, at about 5 months?
I hope everyone is having a good weekend!
