Yes, I used to do the same thing..hate to hurt peoples feelings..but by saying too much it sounds like you are not the one in control of the situation and can be swayed. If I can get someone talking, I have a chance to change their mind..if they are firm and say little, I know they mean it.
Set your rules now..some are not breakable, others can bend a bit. I tell people, my rule is..no pups under 12 weeks. No pups are sold for breeding (unless it is a close friend)..but you don't even need to say that.
