Jackson was around... 6 yrs old when we added Lola, the cockapoo puppy, to our household. They get along famously and are BFF's. She was supposed to be my parents dog but alas kinda became mine. I will say I really miss having 1 dog for a few reasons - costs... small dogs often require dentals, which can add up every year or so quite a bit, food, treats, etc, double. Also, it was soo much easier traveling with one. It is not horrible doing things with 2 but it's also not as "easy". And I enjoy bringing my dogs everywhere I can and doing errands, shopping, etc, they both behave well but there are a few things I'd like to work on- they tend to want to walk in opposite directions etc sooo lol. Just less to juggle!! But at home they have each other all day while I work, they play in the evenings, etc. Depends on your lifestyle tbh.
