You can train a dog to stand still all of the above ways. I use 30 second brushing sessions followed by treats gradually increasing the time as tolerated with patience on the dog's part and don't stop because dog moves a bit, only when they've had all they can tolerate for that session. Treat, praise when still, say " uh on" when moving a lot and look away from the dog to show displeasure, give him some feedback that moving is uncool. If done gradually enough and with enough positive, happy reinforcement and "uh oh" feedback when necessary, you can accommodate a dog to accept almost anything as long as you are calm yourself with it and reward the dog for what he gets right. Whatever works best for your dog is the best way to go.
