I'd let the vet do it because the positioning of the chip is important. You don't want to go too deep yet at the same time, you dont want it to be too shallow under the skin. It's not much to get a vet to do it, I know some have different pricing but mine for example does it for $29 and then if you choose AKC companion animal recovery system, they charge 12.95 to register for life in their registry.
