I lived in NY (the Bronx) when the World Trade Center got attacked, I had a summer home in the Poconos Pa. where I now live. Months after the attack coming from NJ to cross the George Washington bridge to NY they had the National Guards in full war gear with guns at the toll booths. It was horrifying seeing this.
It's beyond horrible how our way of living has changed in just a few short years.
