I have a 12 year old no incontinence issues and neither does my almost 3 year old. I grew up with mostly female dogs and we never had that issue. Males have to be neutered so keep that in mind too. I love the attitude females tend to have but I have found my boys are a bit more cuddly sometimes. It really honestly depends on the dog. I say go with what you want because this is a 13+ year commitment so you want to be happy.
