I'd go with the microchip and have the vet do it. I've never heard of the home microchipping, but I'm more of a play-it-safe guy. I suppose you could call your vet and ask what he/she thinks about it.
The tattoo is great once the dog has been found and if there's a dispute of ownership, but the average animal control officer is not going to look for tattoos. They will scan for microchips.
