I have a carpet steamer too. I've found that if I add some of the odor remover product (odo ban, nature's miracle, whatever) to the solution in the steamer and do my carpets...then use a dehumidifier, or turn on the heat or ac to dry the carpets out more quickly it seems to work. Once, when my shih tzu was very old and very incontinent, I had to do that three times before the smell left.

Note: smell is definately WORSE when cleaning. Also, it's pointless if your pet pee's in the area again, so watch closely.

GOOD LUCK!
