Well proof No, but there have been articles written by people who knew the origin. In 1891, P H Coombs, researched the origins, and talked to people who knew how the breed had been developed in the mid 1800's.

The book I'm talking about was written by Joan B Gordon, and she specifically mentions the maltese, and why people thought it had been included, but in actuality that if it was bred with the maltese, it was AFTER it had been established as a breed of it's own.
