We waited until Fabian was nine months old because he was, at that time, very small for his size and I was worried about the anesthesia. We also took into consideration lifestyle: there's no doggy day care and the groomer has a special partition for "intact" dogs.
He's really not much of a humper... except he very occasionally tries to hump my arm when he's mad that I promptly take away toys that he's pulling the stuffing out of or Kong tennis balls that he's skinned. We found that the stern "no" from me just rewards him with attention, so my husband immediately takes him out of the room and diverts him with another activity until he calms down. We try not to use his pen as a "time out" place, because we don't want him to associate it with being "punished".
