I agree with letting it grow, it does eventually lie down. It is easier to comb the goo out, and it is more comfortable for the little ones.
If Jack's is having bad hair day is will put a small drop of Mane and Tail conditioner on his comb and it helps soften the hair so it lies down better. I do rinse it out though. I love the way the conditioner makes his hair smell, my vet even asked me how I got him to smell so good.
