I can tell you there is no complete way to totally puppy proof. When you can not watch the puppy they need to be an a exercise pen. I suggest you change all your small trash cans to the step cans. Look for anything toxic to the puppy and keep it high. Remember puppies can climb and get on furniture so that needs to be kept free of anything toxic. Mine loved paper so I would keep tissues and paper products high. You might want to put a baby gate at the front door until you train the pup not to dash out the door. I am a huge fan of a collar with a bell. Make sure you have lots and lots of different types of toys.
