Also, he was being fed wet dog food but puppy food. I had to purchase some of it to get him used to new food. He is currently eating Blue Buffalo. He has been to vet and got 1st vaccine. Am I supposed to have a birth certificate? I got him puppy insurance as well and we have puppy orientation today and they will tell us if we need to wait longer for other classes. What else should I be doing? We are in the process of looking for car seat and stroller. Sir Bentley was weighed Thursday, June 7 and was 2.5 lbs. we haven’t taken him out for potty or walks because he isn’t fully vaccinated. My dad thinks I’m being overprotective because his pup is out already (he has three other dogs at home). I do have him in a feeding schedule. I’m not sure what else to say except we love our fur baby and want to do what’s best for him. |
Welcome to YT, and NO, you are not being over protective.A reputable breeder will keep puppies until they are 12 weeks old. Even tho the momma had weaned her pups does not mean they can or should be taken from her. From weaning until pups are 12 weeks old the momma and litter makes are taught many things such as bite inhibition, taught that hard bite playing is not acceptable. Keeping a puppy with it's momma and litter mates until 12 weeks old also makes it easier on the pups to leave their momma and all that they knew for 12 weeks to go home with their new family. Many BYB (back yard breeders) or non- reputable breeders do not want the extra work puppies create, do not want the expense of vaccinating all puppies and look to get rid of them ASAP. Since you say your pup was given his first vaccine I have to assume he is 8 weeks old as that is the age puppies get their very first vaccine. Back in my grandfathers day puppies were sold or given away at 8 weeks old, all most all states allow pups to be sold at 8 weeks old but not younger. So you are correct to worry about puppy being too young, and I commend your vet for telling you he was to young. So, my question is, how old was Sir Bentley when you took him home.
The deed is done and you now have the lil boy, no fault on your part, and I highly commend you for reaching out and asking your questions, shows you will be an excellent yorkie mommy.
Blue Buffalo is not a good quality of food to be feeding your baby, there have been many recalls on their food, is that what the breeder was feeding him, I am asking because puppies should stay on what ever food the breeder was feeding him so he doesn't get an upset tummy. Right now Sir Bentley is going through many changes, and changing his food is not recommended.
If the breeder was feeding him Blue Buffalo it was not a wise choice on their part. Many member suggest another brand of puppy food which I cannot remember what it is, I am sure they will chime in with their advise and suggestions.
This is a community that is devoted to the well being of yorkies and other breeds as well, so any questions you should have just start a new tread and ask away. Members are very helpful in sharing their experience, knowledge, suggestions and advise. It's all about the dogs.
Your vet is correct that you not take the puppy outdoors, nor mingle with strangers or other dogs until he is fully vaccinated which is about 5 or 6 months old. It is advised / suggested to wait 2 weeks after his last vaccine to introduce him to his new world, reason being, give the vaccine 2 weeks to get into his system to ensure he is fully protected.
There is no such thing as a puppy birth certificate (so cute and funny lol) If the breeder's mating pair are AKC registered, the breeder would have registered that litter with the AKC and you would have been given his AKC paper to register him. I am assuming you received no such paper and reason you ask about puppy birth certificate.
Yorkies are a super energetic breed, your puppy will soon be zooming through your home if he hasn't done so already lol, they are full of charm and personality, and before you even realize it, you will be owned by a yorkie and giving in to all his demands lol.
Good luck and keep us updated on Sir Bentley's new life and adventures.
