Default Litter Training & Litter

I have a question for all the experts on litter box training. My little guy has gotten to the point where he knows that he is supposed to use the litter box. He isn't quite at the point where he seeks out the box. He still needs almost constant supervision and ongoing prompting. He was 4 months on March 9, so I know it probably isn't reasonable to expect much more. Here are my 2 questions:

1. When should I expect him to seek out the box all on this own?

2. How can I encourage him to do this while avoiding punishment? I'm afraid I'm a bit prompt crazy.

Thanks for any help you can offer!!
