I picked out my 9 mos. old Tibbe w/a troubled history of having spent his entire life living outside in a cage w/only some type of roof to keep out rain. He was crate-crazy,non-socialized, frightened of everything from grass, doors swinging open or closed to electric appliances coming on to any electronic kind of noise. He likely missed the 'security' of the only 'home' he'd ever known but we bonded after about 5 weeks, he took to obedience training as if he'd been born to over-achieve and has been the love of my life since that day I took scared little him over my pick of a litter of puppies.
My late Jilly's breeder had been given another breeders stock to re-home, said stock consisting of Tibbe(intact at the time) with totally brown teeth, and some other half-grown Yorkies and a litter of puppies. After 3 weeks to settle in, he had his first dental w/retained baby teeth extracted and those horrible brown teeth and gumline cleaned and was neutered. He's been a joy ever since. Work - oh YES! A troubled dog who has lived life in a cage is work but you often find a jewel of a pet if you invest the time and patience in facing down all their fears one at a time with them and learn what they love to do and doing it. With Tibbe, he loves having a job to do and he loves to 'work' at learning new obedience tricks which build his confidence and our bond working as a team. He's now 10 1/2 years old and is a perfect pet. Totally housebroken, never marks the house, chews things he shouldn't and loves his walkies.
If you're willing to put in the time, patience with love and work, deal with any separation anxiety in a positive way, you and your older pup should do fine and in return, you'll have a wonderful companion.
