You need to figure out what motivates your dog. Loki is EXTREMELY food motivated. I have these molases treats that he will do anything for. Also, Loki is used to learning new things. We do "homework" every day for at least an hour. He has to work for everything, his food, games, attention. He is used to being asked to do things. You just need to work with your dog often - start with small sessions at first 10-15 mins. Then you can work up to longer. We also ask for multiple "tricks" before he gets a treat, so he begins to listen without needing the treat every time. We are also very "strict" with Loki and require him to sit before we throw his toy, before we pet him, before he can get up on the couch. We always ask him to do something before he can have what he wants.
If not food, your dog may be motivated by something else. Some dogs are obsessed with balls and will do anything to get you to throw the ball. You just have to find out what it is!
We have also done classes where we've learned a LOT! But most of the tricks we've done at home. What we've learned in class is how to communicate with Loki, how to lure, positive training, etc. We love attending classes!
