If it's a dog registered with the AKC, you should contact them for how to go about getting the papers. Their website is
American Kennel Club - The Dog's Champion - American Kennel Club. You will have to have some kind of identifying information--at least the breed and the original name that the dog was registered under. I just checked, and I was able to find my Bella in their database...
