Bella's new vet doesn't insist on yearly blood work and urinalysis until the age of 5 unless there is a specific issue wrong with her. I requested it be done this time. However, I thought those were two standard practices for a yearly check up?
Additionally, with the vaccines he did offer a 2 year distemper vaccine instead of the yearly one. So I got that in addition to the 3 year rabies shot. This way she only needs her bordatella every 6 months now. I never heard of the 2 year distemper so happy he offered it instead of the yearly shot.
Would love to know what everyone requests to be done during the yearly exam. |
At her annual checkup, our Bella gets a review of her vaccines to see if she's up to date. We get the 3 years rabies now. She gets her bordetella vaccine once a year. Her distemper vaccine is also given on a three year schedule at the same time as the rabies vaccine. She also gets a blood check for heartworms and a fecal check for parasites. They look at her teeth to see if she needs a dental. They check her weight, feel her lymph nodes, etc. She only has bloodwork prior to dentals or surgical procedures. She's never had a urinalysis--they only do that if there's a reason to suspect something might be wrong. Our clinic is closely affiliated with the University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital...
