It is not out of the realm of possibility that PLN in Yorkshire Terriers could have a genetic component. The University of Pennsylvania has developed a PLN DNA test for Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers and Airedale Terriers. See:

This test is currently available only for those two breeds, but I'll ask the primary researcher on the project if they have studied other terriers such as Yorkies and let you know what I find out...
