Like most other vaccines, it takes a couple of weeks for the antibodies to build up to sufficient levels for protection. Someone asked about the side effects of the vaccine a while back, and I'm not sure whether anyone responded. I looked it up, and it's the same side effects as for the core vaccines--being a little out of sorts for a day or two is the most common one.
