Being a carrier of a recessive D Locus allele is definitely something that can and is tested for, although most breeders probably don't do it because it's so rare. Genetic testing for canine hereditary defects has come a long way. Here is a link to the list of genetic diseases that can be tested for by Animal Genetics, a highly reputable company: Animal Genetics

Here is a link to their coat color tests (including D Locus): Canine Color Index

HealthGene in Canada is another reputable firm, and they also do DNA testing for hereditary diseases as well as coat color (including D Locus) although their list of tests is smaller than Animal Genetic's list: Canine DNA Testing | Canine Coat Color Testing ? HealthGene
