When my last girl passed in 2013 I swore no more dogs. I took everything dog related to my local no kill shelter. Dry dog food, treats, coats, sweaters, T-shirts leashes, harnesses, collars, blankets, bags of toys, barking treat cookie jar. And because I saw at the shelter dogs playing in those small round kiddie pools I donated a very large kiddie pool that my girls played in. Every so often they have sales on donated things they can't use (like the barking treat cookie jar). The shelter is not funded, sales money goes to caring for the animals.
So to answer your question YES shelters take coats and what ever else you want to donate.
