Totally agree with trying the soft-sided crate. I have a rather large one for Piper, which she never uses, but I like it! And actually, on our trek from Nevada to Wisconsin, Piper would go from my lap into her crate (in back seat) on her own because it made for more comfortable sleeping. I think a new soft crate will work because it won't have bad connotations, plus it'll be so much more comfortable and cozy!
