With my past Maltese, I had always plucked. She had ears that flopped down, which held in moisture. I always used a powder to help with the grip when plucking it myself.
With my two Yorkies, I have never plucked. They have very perky ears that stand up and I feel with the airflow, they should be okay to not get infections. I always make sure to dry their ears well after I bathe them. They've never gotten ear infections before. I only trip the hair down when I groom them.
