Question Anal gland infection

This has not been our year for fur baby health... Bella randomly got diarrhea and some vomitting a few weeks ago. Was treated with 7 days metronidazole and bland diet and eventually returned to normal stool and normal diet. While transitioning from bland diet, I wanted to switch back to Natural Balance fish and sweet potato. She had been on that for a few years but I had switched to Blue grain free chicken just because she can be picky sometimes. I figured best to go back to natural balance after the diarrhea episode.

Now we have a new issue. Bella will be 10 this month and up until this year has never needed to have anal glands expressed. I took her for the first time in Feb of this year because she had a fishy smell and was licking back there. We again had to go again in Aug/sept to have them expressed again. Well, this past Friday (27th) she had them expressed again because she was sitting, looking back at her bum and licking a lot. There was a smell, but it was not the fishy smell, it was almost like dirt and metallic mixed together. The vet expressed them and said the left was empty and the right was full but the coloring was normal and not thick. Bella was fine until yesterday (only 6 days after last expression) when she started the smell again and was licking. Back to the vet we went and the left had very tiny amount but the doctor said the right had greenish tint to it so she believed it could possibly be infected. She put her on 14 days (twice a day) of metronidazole since she is so small and tolerates the metro well.

I am just kind of shocked how this progressed so quickly. We just had them expressed 6 days before. I asked the vet how this could have happened and she said the colon is a dirty place. My concern now is that this is not going to cure her anal gland infection. Does anyone have any experience with anal gland infection and this treatment? Or just oral Antibiotic treatment alone? Her bum looks normal, the vet said I shouldn't have to worry about an abscess now. Her stool is very firm too on the natural balance and has been for about a week or so since the diarrhea has cleared. I could really use advise on anyone who has dealt with an anal gland infection on just oral antibiotics alone. Thanks!!
