My boy was a 2.5 yo rescue, I didn't know if he was house broken or pad trained, didn't know what word was used for pee or poop. I bought him home, took him out to the yard and used the word pee-pee and poo-poo and waited until he made, when he did I made a big fuss, happy dance, clapping hands, if he peed I praised saying good boy pee-pee, or poo-poo, it was obvious he was house broken because he never used the pad I set down for him, and he let me know when he had to make (lucky me). When you take him out he must know it's to potty, so keep repeating the word pee-pee or poo-poo over and over or what ever words you use, treat and praise when he potties, happy dance, clapping hands shows him he did something good and he will want to make you happy. Keeping him on a potty schedule is ideal, feed same time every morning and night, wait 30 minutes then take him out, even if he made indoors still take him out, if he makes before 30 minutes then you know you have to get him out sooner, dogs are creatures of habit, if you keep to a schedule they will know when it's time they go out to potty, you must be consistent in feeding time and potty time. Tethering him to you is also a good way of catching him and taking him out before he can make in the house. Although he is 2 yo he is still very trainable. |
