I'm a big supporter of crate training and it worked very well for my two yorkies. I tried ex-pen and potty pads. It just caused me more grief because my two yorkies thought carpet was okay to pee on. So I started from scratch and lots of consistency.

Whenever the dog didn't pee or poop when let out the crate, they went back in and we tried again in a few minutes. Lots of praise and treats when the dogs did what they were supposed to and its worked in our favor.

You can retrain your adult rehome, just be patient and protect your floors. If you don't want your puppy to pee on the carpet, don't let him near it. Use a enzyme cleaner, when you catch them in the act, correct them. Some dogs need more correction than others (I learned this in dog class) and most yorkies it doesn't take much but they get the point when you want them to do something.
