I have never gotten a dog to provide company for another I get one because I want another dog - and I provide that company. You are trying for a second child so your life will become even busier which you know already. Dogs often get along alright - but what happens if they don't? Do you have the patience and time to deal with that situation?

It is right and good you are evaluating your situation. Just know that as dogs mature it is natural they might be more restfull and sleep more during the down hours.
