We are having the same opportunity here. We adopted Otto 3 months ago , he is 18 month old now and has grown very attached to my wife and I. Problem is that my wife, which stays at home right now, will start an almost full time job in December so Otto will have a change of routine. As of today he gets 4-5 20 min walks per day, this will decrease to 2-3 in Dec.
Right now when my wife is away from the house more than 3 hours Otto justs sleeps or waits for us on top of the couch looking outside. He doesnt seem sad, just a little bored and goes bonkers when we return.
From time to time he visits his brother and step sister and he plays all day more with her step sister than his brother. He has all day fun! And when we pick him up he justs sleeps all the way home. He is done for the day.
I see my sister yorkies and they are inseparable, they are around 3 months apart in age and it has worked very well for her.
Right now we have the opprtunity to adopt a 6 month old girl, she is being rehomed so we are thinking about it! We have the same fears as you have but I am almost ready to pull the trigger. She probably will need to be house trained as she spends all day in the garden but she even looks "compatible" with my Otto.
We will see! I recommend you take the plunge, I believe it will be a good decision. Now if you get a young puppy maybe you can take some vacation and get some help for the first few months?
