Personally, I love long floor length coats, but keeping one "in coat" requires a lot of grooming and with some dogs it just isn't practical. Lollie is my "tom girl" yorkie. She plays hard and loves to roll in - well just about anything. She is much happier when she doesn't have to endure lengthy grooming times. A quick bath and blow dry between clippings suits her just fine. Lacie, on the other hand, is much more mellow- and loves to be groomed, alas she has a beautiful floor length coat.

Hair grows back. It took about a year the one time I cut Lacie down from dragging the floor to short puppy cut to back to floor length. BTW, there were many tears on my part during the process - the moment I had Lacie cut down I knew I had made a mistake

My best advice is to follow your and do what feels right.
