To me, something doesn't sound right here.
I can't help but wonder if either he is in pain or if his hearing is going (making him startle and be scared) or he is experiencing some dementia.
I would have a full range of motion etc physical exam to check for any pain. Have an ear exam. And I would put him on Anipryl for possible dementia.
