So sorry to hear your beloved boy and best friend is not doing well. He has done very well to be here at 16, you must be a good mom and have a dog with great genes.
I feel for you having to make a decision to put to sleep. It is a terrible thing to have to play God. I had to do that with my last baby girl who had late stage kidney failure at 11 years old, and we were unable to save her. One minute she seemed well and fine and then soon after, she was gone! But she was so very sick, and did not respond to treatment, that I could not see her suffer any more. I felt so guilty at the time but now I feel bad for allowing her to live in pain and misery for so long. So I think that if the kidney is really shutting down he probably may not recover for very long. However, it is possible that your feisty little soul will beat this disease if it is diagnosed early enough, and be treated and live a peaceful life for much more time. Many pups have done well with treatment so praying your baby will do so too. Looking back, I cannot see how my girl got so bad so quickly, as I had her regularly tested and vetted. But sometimes this comes on suddenly and the kidney function is past repair. Wishing you a happy outcome and know that when it is time you will know what to do. Please keep us updated and thoughts and prayers go out to you. Hugs.
