Corneal Ulcer :( Hello,
Could use some advice on my precious Bella. She is 9 years old and last Tuesday morning I saw her rubbing her face on the carpet. I immediately got concerned and thought we were dealing with another random allergic reaction as we have dealt with this two or three times in the past with no indication of what caused it. I did not see any hives. She seemed to stop and we went about our day. Later that evening she came to me squinting her left eye. I thought perhaps it was hair or something so tried looking and wiping away hair. It didn't seem to help so since my vet was closed, I was going to call first thing in the morning. We didnt make it till then, she seemed miserable and kept wanting to paw her eye so by 3am we went to the ER vet. They did a stain and said she had what appeared to be a large corneal ulcer. She was given pain meds, pupil dilation and BNP ointment. I called my vet and had her seen the same day by them as well. She determined as well that it appeared superficial and to come back in two days for recheck. We did and it was already a lot smaller. Bella has had a cone on since the injury. But she still wants to rub her face. I only take the cone off for her to eat and I sit with her. She will be fine and then try to paw at both eyes or go to rub her face. The right eye has been stained twice as well and vet sees nothing.
But vet has putting ointment in both eyes to be safe. The only thing is there was some white discharge in both eyes, but for the past 2 days that has been gone. We went back on Monday evening and they restained her eye and it is healing and very tiny. We go back on this Friday for another follow up.
I have been losing sleep with worry. I don't know why she wants to rub/paw both eyes. We have always believed Bella to have allergies as she will scratch under her chin and lick her paws but not to the point to cause wounds or disclolor fur. I am guessing the carpet rubbing caused the ulcer but what caused the carpet rubbing to begin with. I worry about dry eyes. A tear test has not yet been done because the ointment can cause false results. I want to request one on Friday. I am just so worried that this will never stop and she will just keep causing ulcers. Anyone with experience with this?
The only other interesting thing is, she is no longer squinting or closing her eye but when she "sleeps" she doesn't seem to close her eye all the way.
Sorry for the novel, wanted to give details and would appreciate feedback. |
