I do kennel train my dogs but they are hardly ever in them. I do it so they are used to being in it when they so have to use it. For the first day I leave the puppy in the crate in the common area except to go outside and potty as well as meal times. They get to run around the house for a little while after they potty and eat then go right back in. Once I notice they are doing good I decrease the amount of time spent in there so they are really only going in after the last potty break. All of my brats know it's bedtime when they get placed in their crates or pen and we turn all the lights off and go to our room. Some may whine a little and it's hard not to go to them, but we ignore them as long as we know they aren't hurting themselves and they calm down and go to bed within a few minutes. First thing in the morning they may whine to get out, but we don't let them out until they settle down then it's right outside to potty and they get their freedom back
