A hard decision yes, but most older, only child dogs do adjust when a new baby is added, it will take time for your older one accept a new addition, but in time they do become BFF. Puppies are a lot of work, but, you train a puppy "your way". When you bring an older dog in, they have already been trained by someone else, you then have to undo that previous training and train the dog what you expect from it in it's new home and around your older boy. If you go for an older baby I would look for a 2 yo spayed female, they have calmed a bit but still like to romp and play. If you are thinking of a rescue be very careful in your selection, a surrender would be a wise choice as they are usually not abused. Good luck in your decision.
