I've never read anything bad about pumpkin for dogs. That said, I do trust the VCA Hospitals article about slippery elm. I tried slippery elm when I was a kid, and I remember it being very slimy and yucky. Dogs aren't as picky as humans, and they might eat or drink it, especially if you hide it in their food or water.
