I never crate trained any of my dogs, but my cousin has from a pup, that is his go to quiet place, he'll take his toys, treats and chills out. That boy LOVES his crate. So if Geoff willing went into it and stayed, I would say that's seems to be his comfort zone if he was happy when you came home. One GIANT step for Mary and lil Geoff, yayyyy.
